Reduce storage only after checking which report answers survive.

Bytes and records

A smaller file need not contain fewer observations. Deutsch's DEFLATE specification describes lossless compression: repeated byte strings can be represented by references to earlier strings, alongside literal bytes. Decoding reconstructs the input rather than estimating its measurements.

For a proposed telemetry export, ask what was supplied to that compressor. If an earlier step already summarized the readings, exact decoding returns that summary. It does not reverse the earlier reduction. A file described as compressed therefore needs a transformation history before its size tells you anything about surviving evidence.

Suppose an archive decodes to yesterday's summary rather than today's original export. A byte comparison against yesterday's input can pass while answering the wrong request. The review record must name that input. Reconstruction does not establish measurement accuracy or authorize equipment operation. The proposed test checks reconstruction, not relevance.

Rollup groups records before a query can inspect them. Druid's rollup documentation explains that grouping input events reduces stored rows while sacrificing individual-event queries. It also distinguishes counting stored rows from summing a retained input-count metric.

Hypothetical report question.
Request
How many input events are represented?
Stored-row count
Counts summary records.
Retained input count
Can count represented events if correctly accumulated.

Before accepting a shorter report, identify which count its heading means. A stored-row total cannot reveal whether an input-count measure was retained. Inspect the summary definition instead of treating its row count as the original event count. This recommendation concerns an already qualified dataset with fixed identity, units, time basis and mappings. No database configuration or deletion policy is proposed. The proposed report must distinguish represented events from returned rows. Otherwise a count heading could change meaning while its number still looks plausible.

Averages and spread

OpenTSDB's guide describes synthetic bucket outputs. Hypothetical report F1 asks whether recorded fountain height reached 12 centimetres. A maintenance analyst owns it; archived ledger L1 remains authoritative. Qualified heights at seconds 0 through 7: 0, 0, 0, 12, 6, NULL, NULL, NULL. Zeros are real; NULL reasons unknown. Equal numeric weights, no filling.

Proposed report-only acceptance.
Mean proposal
18/5 = 3.6; hides the peak.
Selected fields
Maximum 12; numeric count 5; total count 8.
Comparison
Match each selected field against L1.

Reject means-only for F1. If counts or peak differ, hold the report for review; never fill unknowns. The analyst publishes F1 after comparison; the maintenance reviewer sees unresolved coverage, not an all-clear. Accepted wording: “Recorded peak 12 centimetres; 3 of 8 records unavailable: 8 minus 5.” This cannot establish duration or authorize equipment changes.

Spread requires another retained quantity. Chan, Golub and LeVeque's variance report combines groups using their counts, means and sums of squared deviations. Squared deviations measure how far observations lie from their group's mean, with larger departures contributing more.

Imagine independent hypothetical batches that each have little internal variation but different means. Combining only their within-batch spread misses the separation between batches. The report's combination formula includes a correction for that separation. Retain quantities for the chosen variance definition; do not average standard deviations.

The authors also analyze rounding problems in apparently simple variance calculations. A mathematically adequate set of summary fields therefore does not validate a numerical implementation. Request its method and a suitable offline comparison. Keep within-group and between-group contributions distinct. This is a different question from retrieving individual peaks. No variance algorithm was run. Pooled spread cannot recover observation order.

Chart shape

A chart can keep original values while omitting observations. Steinarsson's thesis describes Largest-Triangle-Three-Buckets, or LTTB. It selects existing points using triangle areas across neighboring groups. The stated objective is visual representation, not statistical analysis.

A display subset changes visual context.
  1. Selected peakAn original observation may remain.
  2. Omitted neighborsIts immediate surroundings may disappear.
  3. Connecting lineA sharp spike can look broader.

Ask whether a smooth shoulder belongs to recorded observations or to the line joining selected points. Do not calculate excursion duration from apparent width or promise that every extreme survives. The author's Flot plugin requires strictly increasing horizontal coordinates and does not support NULL gaps. That is an implementation limit, not a rule for every port. Keep unknown intervals visible; silently dropping them changes the question. Inspect the displayed gaps explicitly. Keep display and analysis outputs separate. No subset or algorithm output is claimed here.

Distribution and variety

A percentile asks where a chosen fraction of numeric observations falls. Dunning and Ertl's t-digest paper groups numeric values into clusters and retains their means and counts to estimate these distribution questions. Smaller clusters near the tails give extreme quantiles particular attention.

Separate the report questions.
Distribution
How high are values near the upper tail?
Chronology
When did those readings occur?
Boundary
Cluster summaries cannot reconstruct the timestamped sequence.

The chronology boundary is an editorial inference from the retained information. The paper explicitly acknowledges information loss and interpolation assumptions; single-observation clusters are an exact-information exception. State that the percentile is estimated, and identify the numeric population summarized. It cannot establish excursion duration or cause. AI can explain that qualification but cannot restore discarded sequence. No universal error guarantee is asserted. Reordering observations could retain the same distribution while changing the event sequence.

Another compact summary answers how many different labels appeared. Flajolet and colleagues' HyperLogLog paper estimates the number of distinct elements using registers updated from hashed inputs. Hashing converts an input into a repeatable bit pattern; the retained registers summarize patterns rather than retaining the label list.

For an independent hypothetical report of status labels, distinguish total messages from distinct status values. Repeating the same label changes the first question without introducing another distinct label. Cardinality means distinct count; its estimate concerns the second question. It cannot supply a readable inventory of which labels occurred.

Use estimated distinct label count, with the covered report interval stated. Request exact retained labels if the next question is which labels require investigation. Do not turn the estimate into a claim that every label was checked. No hashes or estimates were processed here. The status-label report is hypothetical.

Filtered values

Some reductions change the values themselves. SciPy's decimate reference applies a low-pass anti-aliasing filter before reducing equally spaced samples. Low-pass filtering suppresses faster variation; its output is a processed signal rather than a selection of original measurements.

Label the processed result.
  1. InputEqually spaced numeric samples.
  2. FilterValues change before reduction.
  3. ReportIdentify peaks as filtered values.

The documented phase handling addresses timing displacement. It does not recover detail removed by filtering. Before comparing a processed peak with an original-record peak, establish which representation each number describes. A lower processed peak alone cannot establish that the original excursion was absent. A NULL-bearing array is not a qualified complete numeric input; no replacement values or successful run are assumed. Pinned SciPy 1.16.2; not acquisition-rate advice. A peak table with separate original and processed columns lets a reviewer compare each representation with its counterpart.

Numeric accuracy

A representation can retain positions while approximating numeric values. zfp's compression-mode documentation distinguishes constraints on compressed size, precision and absolute error, plus reversible compression. Precision here concerns encoded information; absolute error concerns the difference between original and reconstructed values.

Match the requested constraint.
Fixed rate
Bound compressed size.
Fixed accuracy
Control absolute reconstruction error, subject to documented limits.
Reversible
Reconstruct supported input values bit for bit.

A proposed report should name the mode before claiming that reconstructed peaks equal original values. Near-lossless is not the same promise as reversible. The fixed-accuracy documentation also identifies a machine-precision limit relative to a block's largest value. Blocks are groups processed together. Keep that qualification attached to an accuracy claim. No compressed size or error bound has been measured here, and no setting is recommended for equipment decisions. Different constraints need separate report labels, even when their plotted curves look alike.

Reportable answers

Even an apparent yes-or-no answer can be approximate. Bloom's original paper describes compact membership tests that allow some nonmembers to be accepted. Its bit-based method sets several positions for each inserted item. Other items can share those positions, producing a false positive.

Hypothetical diagnostic-code lookup.
Positive test
Possibly present; request exact supporting records.
Negative test
Absent from the correctly constructed represented set.
Report boundary
Neither answer establishes coverage outside that set.

For this proposed lookup, report which interval and code field the represented set covers. A positive test does not establish a fault or identify an occurrence time. If exact supporting records no longer exist, preserve possibly present rather than converting the answer into confirmed. No filter was built or queried. Put the qualification in the report sentence where the reader uses the answer. The next step is exact confirmation, if available.
